The Brenthurst Foundation invites recent graduates to apply for the 2025 Machel-Mandela Internship Program, named in honor of former South African President Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel.

This internship offers graduates the chance to gain experience with one of Africa’s leading think tanks, contributing to tasks like event coordination, writing papers and opinion pieces, and participating in other policy-driven projects.

Interns will engage in full-time work for at least six months, beginning on February 1, 2025. Candidates can be from South Africa or any other country and will be based at the Brenthurst Foundation’s headquarters in Parktown, Johannesburg. During the program, interns will collaborate closely with the Foundation’s team on various initiatives, some of which may involve international travel.

Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend, with housing provided if required (per Foundation policies). Additional work-related expenses may also be covered, subject to the Foundation’s discretion.

About the Brenthurst Foundation

Founded in 2004 by the Oppenheimer family, the Brenthurst Foundation continues the legacy of the 2003 Brenthurst Initiative, which sparked significant policy discussions on economic growth in South Africa. Eligibility Criteria

  • Preferably under the age of 30
  • Possession of a Master’s degree
  • Strong verbal and written English skills; knowledge of African and other languages is an advantage
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-driven, proactive, and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Accurate time utilization skills with meticulous trait.
  • Proficiency in essential IT tools
  • Copy-editing and proofreading abilities are beneficial
  • A genuine interest in innovative solutions for Africa’s economic growth and development, with an understanding of the Foundation’s mission
  • Background knowledge in African economics and politics, especially in Southern Africa
